【November Grand Sumo Tournament】

Have you recently spotted any sumo wrestlers in traditional chonmage topknot hairstyles while strolling around town? If you have, it's because the 'November Grand Sumo Tournament,' a traditional Japanese sumo event, is taking place. While there are six Grand Sumo Tournaments held annually, the one in November is known as the Kyushu Basho, and Fukuoka serves as the host city.

This year, it's being held at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center , or Fukuoka International Center, from November 12th to the 26th. During this period, colorful banners and flags line the area around the venue, and sumo fans from all over Kyushu gather in Fukuoka, creating a lively atmosphere every day. Additionally, during this time, sumo stables are set up around Fukuoka city and its suburbs, where you can visit and interact with sumo wrestlers.

While you can watch sumo on television, there's a unique intensity to witnessing sumo bouts live! In the venue, you'll not only witness the sumo matches but also get a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes activities of the people who support sumo. It's a fascinating and entertaining opportunity to see these backstage efforts.

Why not take advantage of these two weeks and watch sumo in Fukuoka during this special event?

Fukuoka City Information

Autumn's National Fire Prevention Campaign Week

Now I have some information from Fukuoka City. This year, November 9th to 15th is the Autumn National Fire Prevention Campaign week. As we move from Autumn to Winter, the air becomes drier and incidents involving fires increase. In Fukuoka City last year, there were 266 incidents! The main causes of incidents involving fires include cigarettes, gas burners and home heaters.

You've got to be extra careful with those little gas stoves.  When it gets cold, and you want to make a nabe or hot pot at the table, the gas stove often comes out. And when you do use it, make sure you never leave the stove unattended while it is on.

Also, be careful of starting fires with cigarettes. They are a known fire hazard and this should go without saying but do not smoke while in bed and don't let your cigarette butts just pile up. Make sure you put your cigarette out completely with water when you are done smoking.

Some other examples of fire incidents that might occur are when clothes hanging to dry or curtains are near a heater catch fire, or when your futon or blanket is too close to the  heater and, while you are sleeping, catches fire. It's really dangerous to put things that might be flammable near a heater. Also, don't forget to double check that you've switched off the heater when it's not in use.

Also, make sure to regularly check that the smoke alarm in your house is working and that your fire extinguisher is up to date. It's important to practice fire safety every day.

This message was brought to you by Fukuoka City.

【Momiji-gari, Autumn Leaves Viewing】

The temperature is dropping, and the weather is feeling a bit
more autumn-like. The trees are turning vivid shades of red, orange, green, and yellow, and in Japan, just
as people enjoy cherry blossom viewing in the spring, there's a cultural tradition of appreciating the
colorful foliage in the autumn.
It's called "紅葉狩り" (Momijigari), and it involves activities such as walking, hiking, taking a drive, or
traveling to hot springs in order to see the autumn foliage. People also take photos of the colorful leaves,
paint them, or enjoy meals or a soak in the hot spring while surrounded by the vibrant scenery. There are
so many ways to appreciate this natural beauty, you just need to find the one that suits you.
In the next topic, the information from Fukuoka City, I'll introduce some recommended spots within
Fukuoka city for enjoying Momijigari!

【Fukuoka City Information】

Japanese Gardens and Autumn Foliage
First, one great spot to see Autumn colors is at a Japanese garden and fortunately, Fukuoka City boasts
several Japanese gardens. Here in the city, we have:
1. Yusentei Park
2. Shofuen Garden
3. Rakusuien Garden
4. Ohori Park Japanese Garden
These Japanese gardens are conveniently located within the city, which means they're easy to get to for a
visit. And they're a great place for even a short visit because Japanese gardens provide the opportunity to
appreciate seasonal beauty within a limited space.
They often offer matcha tea for a small fee, allowing you to relax while enjoying the garden's view. You
can take leisurely strolls around the ponds and savor the tranquil, crisp air.
This season is a recommended time to visit these gardens, as you can also enjoy the beautiful autumn
foliage. But, if a Japanese garden isn't your cup of tea, Fukuoka City has many other popular spots for
viewing autumn leaves, such as the Fukuoka City Museum area, Aburayama Citizen's Forest, and
Momijihachimangu Shrine. From November to December, these places reach their peak for autumn
foliage. So, get out and enjoy these places this autumn.

Bicycle Parking Manners
One more topic to share and for those of you who commute by bicycle, this is important information for
you. There are a lot of us who get around the city by bicycle and it's important to make sure that we are
parking in designated bicycle parking areas.

Bicycles parked in areas other than bicycle parking lots, like on the street or in public parks are
considered an obstruction to pedestrians or even a nuisance, and are therefore subject to removal under
the assumption that they are abandoned bicycles.
Fukuoka City charges a fee of 2,500 yen to return a bicycle that has been removed, and if the bicycles are
not picked up within a certain period of time, they will be discarded.
There are bicycle parking lots near shopping centers and stations that offer free parking for set periods of
time, so even though it might seem like a hassle, make use of them because it's a lot better than paying
money to get your bicycle back from bike jail!

【Student Recruitment for the Public Nighttime Junior High School-Informational Session on November 5】

Have you heard of "Fukuoka Kibou Junior High School," the only public night time junior high school in Kyushu, here in Fukuoka City? It's located on the 4th floor of the "Fukuoka City Education Center" in Momochi in Sawara Ward of Fukuoka City. Since it's a public junior high school operated by Fukuoka City, there are no tuition fees, and textbooks are provided for free.

The school opened in April of last year, and it currently has students ranging in age from their teens to their eighties, with diverse nationalities. Regardless of nationality, anyone can enroll, so there are students whose mother tongue is not Japanese. They study all nine subjects just like daytime junior high schools while also learning Japanese.

Classes are held from 5:50 PM to 9:20 PM, Monday through Friday, with each class lasting 40 minutes. There are four classes per day. Upon completing the required curriculum, students can obtain a junior high school graduation certificate.

The admission criteria include being a registered resident of Fukuoka City and being born on or before April 1, 2009. This school is open to individuals who, for various reasons, did not graduate from junior high school or were unable to receive sufficient junior high school education. Foreign nationals are also welcome. While you can't study only Japanese, if you have concerns about the language, specialized Japanese instructors provide instruction during Japanese language classes, among others.

The "Fukuoka Kibou Junior High School" will hold a school information session on Sunday, November 5th, starting at 2 PM. If you're interested, please consider attending the information session. Pre-registration is required, and you can apply by phone or online. The phone number is 092-400-0751. They accept calls from 2 PM to 9:30 PM on weekdays. For online registration, you can search for "Fukuoka Kibou Junior High School Student Recruitment."

In addition, flyers and recruitment information are available on the school's website and at various ward offices. They also offer consultation and trial admissions, so feel free to inquire if you have any questions!

If you type fukuoka kibou admissions into a search engine, the website should come up, it'll be in Japanese, but there is translation available on that website for multiple languages, so it should be easy to check out.

【World Translation Day】

This Saturday, the 30th, is "World Translation Day." Are there any books, movies or anything else that pop into your mind in terms of their translation? The first thing that comes to mind for me is Lost in Translation, the movie with Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray. Apparently this year is the 20th anniversary of the movie. It kind of sums up some of the things that can get lost between languages, even some of the things that get lost in the same language if two people aren't on the same page.
Anyway, going back to translations: Have you ever had the experience of watching a familiar story in a foreign language and being surprised by different interpretations and lines? Of course, accuracy in translation is essential, but it's also interesting to discover the differences in how things are explained and interpreted. Many words exist that are unique to a particular country and may be hard to understand without context. Translations share the meaning and nuances of words and cultures you may not be familiar with. Of course, nowadays, there are convenient translation apps to help you make your way through new languages. Definitely take advantage of them as you enjoy life here, discover the charm of Fukuoka, and expand your world by connecting with people near and far.

Diaper Services from Fukuoka City

Now, I have some information from Fukuoka City for you, especially useful for those of you with infants and children under 2 years old.

To receive these electronic stamps, you need to register for the service. Information about how to use the service has been sent to eligible households, so please register through the dedicated website.

【Koshien Summer Baseball】

Koshien, the high school baseball tournament held every year in August is considered one of Japan's iconic summer traditions. As the season approaches, it becomes a daily topic in the media and is broadcasted extensively. Although its formal name is the "National High School Baseball Championship Memorial Tournament," it is commonly known as "Koshien" due to its location at the Koshien Stadium in Hyogo Prefecture. High school students from all over the country aspire to participate in this tournament. They compete in intense matches starting from regional qualifying tournaments, and only the schools that triumph advance to the main event.

Many players who later have careers in professional baseball have experienced this tournament. Manga and movies have been inspired by it, and fans eagerly await this event every year. Each school's journey is full of drama, and documentaries leading up to their participation are often featured. In addition to the actual games, there are many other highlights such as the singing of each school's alma mater, performances by the brass bands, the cheerleading squads' performances, and the tradition of players taking home a handful of sand from the field after each game. The tournament offers more than just the matches; it showcases the youth and sportsmanship of high school athletes giving their all on the field. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend watching these high school players' spirited and sportsmanlike efforts!

DJ's recommended summer recipe

It's still pretty hot out, isn't it. I hope all of you are feeling alright and haven't been wiped out by this heat. Although we want to get out and be active and do loads of things in the summer, to do that, we need to make sure we're getting the right kind of nutrition. So, I've got a recipe idea for you to help beat the heat of summer.

My go to dish in the summer is basically any kind of cold noodle dish!

At home, I often make somen with kimchi, sesame seed oil and cucumbers on top for a quick and refreshing meal. Just a little bit of mentsuyu or dashi soy sauce for some extra salt and it's ready to go. Cucumbers are great for getting a little more hydration in your body, kimchi is fermented, so it's great for you, plus the spice always helps in the summer and the dish overall isn't too heavy, but still filling. Add a  little tuna or shredded cooked chicken for some extra protein. Try it! Let me know what you think and if you have a good summer dish, let me know.

If you are out, quite a few shops have reimen, or cold noodle dishes on their menus that you can try as well. I had a really tasty cold champon noodle dish with mabo eggplant at Ringer Hut the other day. I definitely recommend it for when you want a

quick lunch. It had loads of veggies, plus the eggplant and was just spicy enough to make it the perfect summer dish on a day out. There are a few Ringer Hut scattered around the city, in Tenjin, Hakata, Momochi, Sasaoka...so pop in one when you have the chance.

【The Island of Fukuoka City"Nokonoshima""Shikanoshima"】

When it comes to summer, it's all about the sea! Have you already been to the beach and gone swimming? This week, let me introduce two islands that you can easily visit as day trips from Fukuoka: "Nokonoshima" and "Shikanoshima."

"Nokonoshima" is approximately 10 minutes away by ferry from Noko Ferry Terminal in Meinohama here in Fukuoka City. This island has a circumference of about 12 kilometers and boasts beautiful seasonal flowers and stunning seascapes. There are many spots that exude a sense of history, and you'll see so many breathtaking views on the island. At the beach, you can enjoy activities such as motor boating, banana boating, water skiing, a floating trampoline on the sea, diving platforms, and swings. One of the island's famous spots is the "Nokonoshima Island Park," popular for its sunflower fields in full bloom. The island is also equipped with restaurants offering fantastic views, barbecue houses, camping facilities, and lodging options to fully immerse yourself in nature.

Next up is "Shikanoshima," an island connected to mainland Fukuoka by both land and sea routes. You can easily access it from the city using either method of transportation. The island's greatest attractions lies in its beautiful sea. Diving spots offer encounters with tropical fish and seahorses. You can also enjoy activities like yachting, windsurfing, scuba diving, and fishing. Additionally, there are dining establishments where you can savor fresh seafood, and "Kin'in Dock" and "Kin'in Curry" are famous local dishes, so be sure to try them out.

Have a fun and active summer here in the city!

【Summer Retreats in Fukuoka City】

It's the peak of summer, and many students will be getting ready for their summer vacations this weekend, so let me introduce you to some  "summer retreats" in Fukuoka City.

First, if you're thinking that you want to get out and be active, how about visiting a valley or waterfall? In Sawara Ward, Fukuoka City, there is the "Nogouchi Keikoku," a 700-meter-long lush walking trail along the river. Not only can you walk along the river, but you can also enjoy playing in the shallow water and explore the nature around the area.  Sawara Ward is also home to the "Karan no Taki" and "Bouzuga Taki" waterfalls, which are recommended attractions and places to take a break from the summer heat.

If you prefer to spend time in a cool indoor environment, how about visiting a museum or science center? In Ropponmatsu, Chuo Ward, there is the "Fukuoka City Science Museum," which offers science workshops perfect for children to practice researching things on their own and a planetarium that always has something on! Also, in Momochi Beach, Sawara Ward, you can find the "Fukuoka City Museum," where an anime and Ghibli exhibition is being held until August 31st.

Going to a library is also a great option! Fukuoka City has libraries in each ward, but among them, the "Fukuoka City Public Library," located next to the Fukuoka City Museum, is the largest library in the city, with over 1.2 million books. You can enjoy programs such as kamishibai (paper theater) and mini theaters where movies are screened. It also has restaurants, self-study rooms, and discussion rooms, so you can spend the whole day comfortably.

On Fukuoka City's website, you can find information on museums in Fukuoka City. Search for "Fukuoka City Museum" and use it as one reference for your outings.
